Inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers, filmmaker Ciro Guerra casts indigenous actors and crafts beautiful, even psychedelic, black-and-white images for what he calls “an encounter of wisdom and knowledge in the context of destruction,” as his film juxtaposes the beauty and mystery of nature with the destructive force of colonialism.
