The most honored Israeli film of the year, this intense and intimate drama from filmmaking siblings Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz stars Ronit as Viviane, an Israeli woman who tries to finalize a divorce (gett) from her estranged husband and finds herself effectively put on trial by her country’s religious marriage laws. Only Orthodox rabbis can legalize a union or its dissolution, and only with the husband’s consent. Viviane is trapped in a loveless marriage, but her religiously devout husband Elisha (Simon Abkarian) continually refuses her pleas. Between his intransigence, her fighting determination and the rabbinical judges’ pronouncements, tragedy vies with absurdity in an uncompromising portrait of a woman’s struggle to overcome an unmoving patriarchy and live a life of her own design. In Hebrew, French and Arabic with English subtitles. Writers/Directors: Ronit Elkabetz, Shlomi Elkabetz. (Israel 2014) 115 min.
