Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, the first English-language movie from Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth) is a wicked satire of contemporary relationship mores starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux and Ben Whishaw. Filmed in Ireland, this weird and wild tale is set in a dystopian near future in which single people are rounded up and transferred to a hotel, where they have 45 days to find a matching mate or be transformed into the animal of their choice. In true surrealist fashion, the story’s absurdities are rendered with deadpan humor, as David (Farrell), recently divorced, encounters the hotel’s officious staff and his doleful fellow guests, each more desperate by the day. Dark comedy and a few shocking moments of violence make this inventive film an experience not soon forgotten. Rated R. Writers: Yorgos Lanthimos, Efthimis Filippou. Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. (UK/Greece/France 2015) 119 min.
