Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie) merges his wildly creative vision with the fertile imagination of novelist Reif Larsen in this lovely and whimsical adaptation of The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet. Newcomer Kyle Catlett stars as our titular hero, a 10-year-old cartographer and all-around whiz kid, who sets off on foot from his Montana home to receive an award at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. However, he doesn’t tell his quirky family, which includes his entomologist mother (Helena Bonham Carter), cowboy dad (Callum Keith Rennie) and his Miss America-aspiring older sister (Niamh Wilson). Director Jeunet has a field day with his artistic use of 3D, animating the drawings and inventions that decorate the margins of Larsen’s text. With Judy Davis, Dominique Pinon. Writers: Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Guillaume Laurant. Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Rated PG. (France/Canada 2013) 105 min.
