Bay Area filmmaker Jennifer Kroot will present and discuss her charming and insightful documentary about actor-turned-activist George Takei. Recalling his experiences as a child forced into Japanese American internment camps during World War II, Takei reveals the ways that racism affected him well into his acting career. Even after landing the iconic role of Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, he continued to challenge the status quo. Now at 76, nine years after coming out of the closet, Takei and his husband Brad have become the poster couple for marriage equality. Kroot’s lively portrait captures Takei’s wicked humor and sharp eye, as she follows his new adventures in social media as well as his ongoing political activity. Interviews include William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, Howard Stern, Dan Savage and Walter Koenig. 94 minutes plus discussion.
