One summer day in 1945, an Orthodox man and his grown son disembark at a station in Hungary while villagers prepare for the wedding of the town clerk’s son. The clerk himself fears that the men may be heirs of the town’s deported Jews, who would demand return of property that had been confiscated illegally. Townspeople expect the worst and some behave accordingly. Beautifully photographed in lustrous black and white, 1945 paints a complex picture of a society trying to come to terms with the recent horrors they’ve experienced, perpetrated or just tolerated for personal gain. Winner of the San Francisco Film Critics Circle Award at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. In Hungarian with English subtitles. Director: Ferenc Török. (Hungary 2017) 91 min.
