Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke’s expansive new drama stars wife and muse Zhao Tao as Qiao, a young working-class woman in love with Bin (Liao Fan), a ruthless gangster. During an ambush by a rival gang, Qiao saves Bin by brandishing a gun, but this act of loyalty to her lover earns her a significant stretch in prison. Upon release, she immediately seeks out Bin to pick up where they left off, but she discovers that both her nation and boyfriend have significantly changed. Zhao’s moving and resonant performance highlights what constitutes Jia’s epic, visually striking portrait of China from the onset of the 21st century to the present.
