Based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, this lyrical ode to the love of books stars Emily Mortimer as Florence, a free-spirited English widow in 1959 who risks everything to open a bookstore in a conservative East Anglian coastal town. When local grande dame Mrs. Gamart (Patricia Clarkson) selfishly obstructs her, Florence forges ahead with quiet determination. Bill Nighy shines as reclusive widower Mr. Brundish, whose crusty exterior softens after Florence introduces him to Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. While it’s English language, this co-production from Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet (Learning to Drive) recently garnered three top Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. With Honor Kneafsey, James Lance, Frances Barber. Narrator: Julie Christie. Rated PG. Writer/Director: Isabel Coixet. (UK/Spain 2018) 113 min.
