Hatzín (Hatzín Navarrete), a young teenager from Mexico City, travels to collect the remains of his father, found in a communal grave amidst the vast and barren landscape of northern Mexico. A casual encounter with a man (Hernán Mendoza) who shares a physical resemblance with his father introduces both doubt around the truth and hope for the possibility of a family connection.
Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Leoncino d’Oro Agiscuola Award, the humanist yet searing The Box concludes a superb trilogy from Venezuelan writer-director Lorenzo Vigas, alongside his short Elephants Never Forget (2004) and feature debut From Afar (2016).
