Review: In ‘Grandma,’ Lily Tomlin Energizes an Intergenerational Road Trip
– A.O. Scott, The New York Times
Lily Tomlin gives a funny and powerful performance as Elle, a misanthropic, cash-strapped poet whose curt breakup with her latest girlfriend (Judy Greer) is quickly followed by a visit from her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner), who urgently needs money for an abortion. Sage and Grandma Elle hit the road and spend the day in search of the funds, and their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets. After its widely acclaimed Sundance premiere, Hollywood Reporter praised Tomlin’s work as a “sublime match of performer and role.” Rated R for language and some drug use. With Marcia Gay Harden, Laverne Cox, Nat Wolff, John Cho and Sam Elliott. Writer/Director: Paul Weitz. (US 2015) 80 min.
