Latvian-born artist and filmmaker Signe Baumane will present and discuss a special screening of her new animated feature, which she describes as “a funny film about depression.” Filled with fantastic and surreal imagery and leavened by a twisted sense of humor, the film seriously explores the history of depression and madness among generations of women in Baumane’s family, spanning along the way several decades of Eastern European history, from Nazi occupation through Soviet rule, and culminating in her personal struggles with mental illness. Employing a beautifully textured combination of hand-drawn and stop-motion techniques, Bauman has produced a poignant (and sometimes hilarious) tale of mystery, mental health, redemption and survival. Co-producer Sturgis Warner will join Baumane for the discussion. Writer/Producer/Director: Signe Baumane. (US/Latvia 2014) 88 min. plus discussion.
