Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Agota Kristof, this chillingly atmospheric tale focuses on 13-year-old twin brothers (Laszlo Gyemant and Andras Gyemant) in Nazi-occupied Hungary who are sent to the country to stay with their abusive grandmother (Piroska Molnar) in the latter part of World War II. Speaking and acting as one person, they respond to the cruelty around them by desensitizing themselves to empathy or emotions and writing only cold hard facts in their notebook. Filmmaker János Szász creates the sense of a dark fable or grim (Grimm?) fairy tale in this visually striking drama. With Ulrich Thomsen, Ulrich Matthes. Rated R for disturbing violent and sexual content, nudity and language. In Hungarian with English subtitles. (Hungary 2013) 109 min.
