THE SECRET LIFE OF PLANTS IS PLAYING AT THE SMITH RAFAEL FILM CENTER

The music your plants are making in secret…

Based on the bestselling book by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, this 1978 documentary has been unavailable for years and is remembered primarily for Stevie Wonder’s unique score, which was released as his double-album Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants. The film, which stands today as a product of its time, is a fascinating account of the physical, emotional and spiritual relations between plants and humankind. It explores the idea that plants may be sentient, despite their lack of a nervous system and a brain, and documents the pain and joy plants experience and how they communicate feelings. Alternating time-lapse sequences with segments depicting various scientists at work, the film travels the world to explore the interconnectivity of all things. Music: Stevie Wonder. Writers: Peter Tompkins, Christopher Bird, based on their book. Director: Walon Green. (US 1978) 97 min.
