Presented in the new restoration that premiered at Cannes this year, this classic British film noir was filmed on location in war-scarred, Allied-partitioned Vienna in the late 1940s, centering on American pulp writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), who arrives with the promise of work from his old pal Harry Lime, only to learn that Lime is dead. Or is he? Alida Valli, Trevor Howard, Bernard Lee and Orson Welles co-star in this visually dazzling and emotionally resonant drama, written by Graham Greene, directed by Carol Reed, produced by Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick and photographed spectacularly by Robert Krasker. And don’t forget the zither music by Anton Karas. This timeless masterpiece is especially worth a revisit in this new restoration. Besides, it should help tide you over until our Welles 100 Part Two series in the fall! (UK 1949) 104 min.
