Jordan’s submission for foreign-language Oscar consideration is a beautifully filmed tale set in 1916 during World War I. While conflict rages in the Ottoman Empire, young Theeb (Jacir Eid) lives with his older brother Hussein (Hussein Salameh) in a traditional Bedouin community isolated by the vast, unforgiving Arabian desert. When a British Army officer (Jack Fox) engages Hussein to guide him on a perilous journey, Theeb secretly chases after them. But they soon find themselves trapped in a threatening terrain riddled with mercenaries, revolutionaries and outcasts, in this stunningly visual adventure from the time of Lawrence of Arabia. In Arabic with English subtitles. Writers: Naji Abu Nowar, Bassel Ghandour. Director: Naji Abu Nowar. (Jordan/UK/United Arab Emirates/Qatar 2014) 100 min.
