Adapted by German filmmaker Christian Petzold (Barbara, Phoenix) from the 1944 novel by Anna Seghers, this thriller focuses on German refugee Georg (Franz Rogowski), who flees to Marseille as fascism spreads and assumes the identity of the dead writer whose transit papers he is carrying. Georg falls for Marie (Paula Beer of Never Look Away), a mysterious woman searching for her husband, the very man whose identity he has stolen. While following the Holocaust-era story, the film depicts the events in a present-day setting, blurring periods to create a timeless exploration of the plight of displaced people. In German & French with English subtitles. Writer/Director: Christian Petzold. (Germany/France 2018) 101 min.
