SCIENCE ON SCREEN:  A PRESENTATION BY DR. PASCAL LEE FOLLOWED BY A SCREENING OF THE MARTIAN 3D

Dr. Pascal Lee will give an illustrated presentation about planning and preparation for the first human mission to Mars. First steps are under way, as we plan for deep space journeys and explore extreme environments on Earth. Dr. Lee will discuss our progress, from the Arctic to Antarctica, from basement labs to the International Space Station, to achieve the first human voyage to Mars.

THE MARTIAN 3D

Following Dr. Lee’s talk, we will screen The Martian in 3D format. Nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, this highly acclaimed film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded alone on Mars and who must find ways to survive until he can be rescued. Damon’s “solo” performance is supported by a terrific ensemble portraying fellow astronauts and NASA officials, including Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Sean Bean and Chiwetel Ejiofor, among others. Rated PG-13. Writer: Drew Goddard, based on the book by Andy Weir. Director: Ridley Scott. Film 144 min.

DR. PASCAL LEE

Dr. Pascal Lee is a planetary scientist at the Mars Institute, the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. Internationally recognized for his work on the history of water on Mars, on the origin of Mars’ moons, and on planning the future exploration of Mars, he has led over 30 expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica to study Mars in comparison to Earth.
