Poland, December 1945: Young French doctor Mathilde (Lou de Laâge) is treating the last of the French survivors of the German camps, when a panicked Benedictine nun shows up at the clinic, begging her to rush to the convent. What Mathilde discovers are a holy sister about to give birth and several more in advanced stages of pregnancy, the results of rape months before by Soviet soldiers. A non-believer, Mathilde copes with the nuns’ fear of exposure and their formidable Reverend Mother (Agata Kulesza from Ida), as their beliefs and traditions clash with harsh reality.
