Unforgettable from the 2015 Mill Valley Film Festival, this first feature by filmmaker Jayro Bustamante is a strikingly authentic drama. Maria, a 17-year-old Mayan girl, lives with her parents on a coffee plantation in the foothills of an active volcano in Guatemala. An arranged marriage awaits her to Ignacio, the plantation overseer, but Maria won’t accept that destiny. Instead she favors Pepe, a young and rather feckless worker who plans to migrate to the United States. With strong performances by the indigenous cast, this lyrical tale gains much power from its natural setting of volcanic rock. “But it’s not just an anthropological study,” wrote David Lewis in the San Francisco Chronicle. “It has a powerful story to tell, too.” In Kaqchikel with English subtitles. Writer/Director: Jayro Bustamante. (Guatemala 2015) 91 min.
