Featured in our inaugural DocLands festival, this literally explosive documentary focuses on the National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico, a site of festivity unlike any other in the world. In celebration of San Juan de Dios, patron saint of firework makers, conflagrant revelry engulfs the town for ten days. More than three quarters of Tultepec’s residents work in pyrotechnics, and this celebration is a showcase of artisanal and technical virtuosity, with towering, whistling, multicolored explosions, and larger-than-life paper bulls adorned with fireworks big and small. Several of the filmmakers worked on Beasts of the Southern Wild, and moments here remind one of that film’s magic. Director: Viktor Jakovleski. (US 2017) 67 min.
