BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM DOUBLE FEATURE PLANETWALKER AND KEEPER

SCREENING FOLLOWED BY ON-STAGE CONVERSATION WITH FILMMAKERS

In 1971, John Francis embarked on a journey that would redefine environmental activism after witnessing the San Francisco Oil Spill. He took a 17-year vow of silence, renounced all motorized transportation and began walking across the United States seeking a deeper understanding of humanity’s relationship with the earth. Planetwalker re-introduces the world to the inner-magic of Dr. John Francis, a central figure in the intersectional environmental movement who’s story takes on new meaning today.

Executed Produced by Douglas Blush, Ben Jealous, Jason Spingarn Koff, Terry Tang, Kristin Powers
Directors: Dominic Gill, Nadia Gill (US 2023) 31 min.

For Flynn, a single father and empty nester in the Bronx, beekeeping is a source of calm, wisdom, and healing. Undeterred by his severe allergy to bee stings, he cares for hives across the city—including several inside his daughter Alaura’s childhood bedroom.
When Flynn receives a life-threatening diagnosis, he reluctantly steps away from the bees under Alaura’s care. Battling cancer while fretting about his hives’ survival, Flynn prepares his daughter to continue living powerfully—with or without him.
Executive produced by Judith Helfand, Sam Pollard, and Maro Chermayeff
Directed, shot, produced, and edited by Hannah Rafkin (39 min, 2024)
