This year at Sundance, people talked about the “Iranian vampire” movie, but while the language is Persian, the locations are Southern California, in this remarkable debut feature by Ana Lily Amirpour. Strange things are afoot in Bad City, an Iranian ghost-town that is home to prostitutes, thugs and other sordid souls, including a lonely vampire (Sheila Vand) wearing a hijab (and riding a skateboard!) who preys on the most unsavory inhabitants while looking for love. Vividly filmed in black and white, it recalls Jim Jarmusch and David Lynch with its atmosphere of outlaw cool and urban surrealism, but it’s also infused with a feminist sensibility. In Persian with English subtitles. Writer/Director: Ana Lily Amirpour. (US 2014)
