Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the latest from Swedish master Roy Andersson continues his theme of “being a human being” that ran through his previous films, Songs from the Second Floor and You, the Living. In this meticulously crafted black comedy, two hapless novelty salesmen lead us on a kaleidoscopic tour of the human condition in reality and fantasy, a journey that reveals the beauty of single moments, the pettiness of others and life in all its tragicomic grandeur. Andersson’s distinctive visual style can be said to resemble a cross between Andrei Tarkovsky’s and Jacques Tati’s, in the finely detailed tableaux that combine rigor and whimsy. In Swedish with English subtitles. Writer/Director: Roy Andersson. (Sweden 2014) 100 min.
