Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral and an African woman, this stirring and visually sumptuous blend of period romance and historical drama is set against the turbulent debate over slavery in 18th century England. Raised as an aristocratic lady by her great-uncle Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) and his wife (Emily Watson), Belle finds that her lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing. While Belle explores her identity as a woman, as well as a woman of color, her guardian Lord Mansfield, who serves as Lord Chief Justice, is asked to preside over a lawsuit that could determine the continuation or abolition of slavery in the entire kingdom. With Sarah Gadon, Miranda Richardson, Sam Reid, Tom Felton, James Norton. Producer: Damian Jones. Writer: Misan Sagay. Director: Amma Asante. (UK 2013) 105 min.
