When a renowned architecture scholar suddenly falls ill during a speaking tour, his son Jin (John Cho) finds himself stranded in Columbus, Indiana, a Midwestern town celebrated for its many modernist buildings. Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), a young architecture enthusiast who shows him around the city as they discuss their conflicted family ties: Jin’s estranged relationship with his father, and Casey’s reluctance to leave Columbus and her mother. Director Kogonada infuses his first feature with naturalistic rhythms, emotional empathy and dynamic visuals. Bestowing the San Francisco Chronicle’s highest rating, David Lewis calls the film an “art house gem” that is “quietly stirring, exquisitely photographed.” With Parker Posey, Michelle Forbes, Rory Culkin. Director: Kogonada. (US 2017) 104 min.
