In a recent survey nearly 96% of male ballet dancers stated that they endured physical or verbal attacks because of dance. Sexism is built into the fabric of classical ballet, an art form that has idolized women in toe shoes and tutus while relegating men to the role of partners. Danseur exposes the bullying and homophobia that these men face while illustrating the vitality of ballet through performance, preservation and education. This moving documentary confronts the social stigma of being a boy in ballet and highlights their determination to keep dancing in spite of it. Featuring James Whiteside (American Ballet Theatre), John Lam (Boston Ballet), Harper Watters (Houston Ballet), and many more. Director: Scott K. Gormley (US 2018) 70 min.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Ben Needham-Wood (Dancer, Smuin Contemporary Ballet) and Donald Carter (Trainer, No Bully).
