In his first feature film as writer and director, comedian Demetri Martin stars as a young New York-based illustrator reeling from his mother’s passing. In a superb performance by Kevin Kline, Dean’s father Robert is actively moving forward with his life, to the extent of planning to sell the family home. Avoiding the inevitable, Dean escapes to Los Angeles on the pretext of a job interview and meets lovely Nicky (Gillian Jacobs), while Robert finds promise with real-estate agent Carol (Mary Steenburgen). The parallel, younger-and-older romances are deftly enriched by Martin’s own sardonic cartoon illustrations, peppered throughout this charming comedy inspired by tragedy.
