In this warm and winning tale filmed in Oakland, Diana Elizabeth Torres stars as Juana, a Latina single mother who gives up her fruit-vending cart to be a kitchen assistant in a local Japanese restaurant. Immediately demonstrating her skill at slicing and dicing anything put in front of her, Juana secretly observes the restaurant’s sushi chefs and teaches herself to make her own. Despite the quiet support of young chef Aki (Yutaka Takeuchi), she discovers that her ambitions collide with a very low glass ceiling, since she is considered both the wrong race and gender to be a sushi chef.
