Acclaimed at its world premiere during the Mill Valley Film Festival, this powerful new documentary follows six African-American college students from Akron, Ohio for more than three years as they go through the unique youth program Alchemy, Inc. Combining drumming and storytelling as well as mentoring, Alchemy teaches self-confidence and helps their male students position themselves as the heroes of their own stories. If this were a narrative drama, filmmaker Karina Epperlein couldn’t have written better characters than these young men, who are exciting to watch, whether they’re navigating racial provocations, estranged fathers or wise grandmothers. Film 92 min. plus discussion.
Appearing onstage with director Epperlein, film subjects Brandyn Costa and Darius Simpson will discuss the film and deliver a short performance of poetry and drumming.
