This quirky comedy-drama stars Domhnall Gleeson as Joe, a young wannabe musician who might be biting off more than he can chew when he joins an avant-garde pop band fronted by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank (Michael Fassbender), who always wears a spherical artificial head with painted-on features. Protected from exposure by his poker-faced band-mate and enabler Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), Frank is an eccentric to be sure, but one who can acknowledge the communicative challenges presented by his perpetual disguise: “Would it help if I said my facial expressions out loud?” Funny, frequently weird and ultimately touching, this tale develops surprising resonance.
