No 20th Century figure has had a more profound effect on the worlds of literature, film, politics, historical debate and the culture wars than Gore Vidal (1925-2012). Anchored by intimate one-on-one interviews with the man himself, this new documentary is a fascinating and wholly entertaining portrait of the last lion of the age of American liberalism. Covering a professional life that spanned more than 50 years of American politics and letters, and seasoned with Vidal’s epigrams worthy of Oscar Wilde, the film includes onscreen commentary by those who knew him best, including Mikhail Gorbachev and the late Christopher Hitchens, and incorporates priceless footage from his 1968 television debates with William F. Buckley and his Dick Cavett Show appearance with Norman Mailer, as well as other public events. Writer/Director: Nicholas Wrathall. (US 2013) 89 min.
