“Simply one of the very most powerful pictures that I have ever seen.”
– Jonathan Demme

Set in Sidi Moumen, the shantytown on the outskirts of Casablanca, this Moroccan drama (a New York Times Critics’ Pick) spans ten years and offers a searing meditation on the roots of Islamic terrorism in poverty and hopelessness. In this slum of tin-roofed shacks, brothers Yachine (Abdelhakim Rachid) and volatile Hamid (Abdelilah Rachid) are separated when Hamid is sent away for tossing a rock at a police car. Hamid returns from prison a changed man and a disciplined Islamic fundamentalist who persuades his brother and friends to follow his spiritual leader, an Imam who is preparing martyrs for the cause. In Arabic with English subtitles. Jonathan Demme is presenting its U.S. release. Writer: Jamal Belmahi. Director: Nabil Ayouch. (Morocco 2013) 115 min.
