Unjoo Moon’s uplifting biopic tells the story of Helen Reddy (Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Hotel Mumbai), the fiercely ambitious Australian singer behind the 1971 megahit anthem that became the rallying cry of the women’s liberation movement.
Beginning in 1966 New York City, the film tracks Reddy’s burgeoning career and her friendship with legendary rock journalist Lillian Roxon (Danielle Macdonald, Patti Cake$), who becomes her closest confident and inspires her to write and sing the iconic song “I Am Woman” which becomes the anthem for the second wave feminist movement and galvanizes a generation of women to fight for change. She also meets Jeff Wald (Evan Peters, American Horror Story), a young aspiring talent manager who becomes her agent and husband. Wald helps her get to the top, but also suffers from a drug addiction, complicating the fraught relationship. Caught in the treadmill of fame and dependent on Wald to manage her professional life, Helen finds the strength to take control of her own career and keep pursuing her dreams. In English. Not Rated. Director: Unjoo Moon (Austrailia 2020) 116 min.
