Jean-Paul (Alain Delon) and Marianne (Romy Schneider) are enjoying a sun-filled summer holiday at their friends’ villa when surprise houseguests drop by: Harry (Maurice Ronet), a mutual friend who also shares a past with Marianne, and Harry’s 18-year-old daughter Penelope (Jane Birkin). This photogenic foursome unleashes a wave of sexual tension, jealousy and potential violence. Director Jacques Deray had already established himself as a specialist in thrillers, but this sleekly erotic drama, which he wrote with legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriére, allowed him to perform a deep-dive on relationships.
