Winner of Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and Russia’s official selection for the Foreign Language Oscar, this visually monumental film by Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return) is set in a small fishing town near the stunning Barents Sea in Northern Russia. Kolya (Alexeï Serebriakov) lives in a beautiful location with his young wife Lilya (Elena Liadova) and his son. The corrupt mayor (Roman Madianov) is determined to acquire Kolya’s property, first by trying to buy him off, but ultimately by any means necessary, in this resonant combination of thriller, family drama and thinly veiled political parable.
