In 1989 the very idea of a competitive, all-female sailboat crew was nearly inconceivable in the world of open-ocean yacht racing. Armed with guts and determination, 26-year-old skipper Tracy Edwards assembled an all-woman crew and, together with Maiden, a second-hand racing yacht, embraced the challenge of the Whitbread Round the World Race (now called The Ocean Race). The hurdles were high to make it to the start of the Whitbread, much less survive to the finish. Proving able competitors, the crew also documented the journey, and by the time they returned to their starting point at Southampton, England, after 32,000 miles of grueling global racing, they had inspired and transfixed the sailing world.
