The latest gem from Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti is a touching personal drama leavened by generous helpings of humor. Margherita Buy stars as Margherita, a film director trying to hold her life together during a complex shoot while her mother (Giulia Lazzarini) lies gravely ill. Fortunately her brother Giovanni (Moretti) has assumed much of the hospital duty, but his relative stability just makes Margherita, ridden by nightmares, feel even more insecure. Enter John Turturro as Barry Huggins, an American star who arrives to play the factory boss in her labor-themed political film. Turturro’s hilarious performance is a virtual tour-de-force, as Barry’s bluster and gauche behavior don’t make Margherita’s life any easier, but at least they can make her smile. In Italian with English subtitles. Writers: Nanni Moretti, Francesco Piccolo, Valia Santella. Director: Nanni Moretti. (Italy 2015) 106 min.
