Veteran documentary master Frederick Wiseman (La Danse) specializes in penetrating portraits of institutions and the people who run them, and National Gallery takes us behind the scenes of a great London museum inhabited by masterpieces of Western art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Filming around major exhibitions of Titian, Leonardo da Vinci and J.M.W. Turner, Wiseman situates us among the docents and audiences in the galleries, but also takes us into administrative offices and restoration areas, observing their work and the dynamic between staff and public. Camera: John Davey. Director: Frederick Wiseman. (US 2014) 183 min.
