German director Christian Petzold (Barbara) reunites with frequent muse Nina Hoss for this atmospheric mystery of identity, illusion and deception set in 1945 Berlin. Hoss stars as Nelly, a Jewish cabaret singer who has survived a Nazi concentration camp badly scarred. She emerges from surgery with a new face, similar but different enough so that her husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld) doesn’t recognize her. In the rubble of postwar Berlin, survival is still a challenge, and Nelly enters into a dangerous game of duplicity and disguise as she wanders smoky nightclubs to discover the truth about her husband, in a gripping drama with echoes of Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Rated PG-13. In German with English subtitles. Writers: Christian Petzold, Harun Farocki. Director: Christian Petzold. (Germany 2014) 99 min.
