This favorite from the Mill Valley Film Festival focuses on San Francisco visual artist and filmmaker Jerry Barrish. Coming from a family of boxing enthusiasts got him started in the bail bonds business (“Don’t perish in jail, call Barrish for bail”), but then he broke the mold, becoming the bailout guy for radical protestors in the 1960s. A fateful walk on a foggy Pacifica beach inspired a new identity as an artist assembling discarded plastic and detritus into whimsical, evocative, poignant human and animal figures. The film explores his struggle for recognition as an artist and his ultimate vindication in a public commission. Music: Beth Custer. Producer: Janis Plotkin. Director: William Farley. (US 2014) 74 min. plus discussion.
