June arrives, not just as a celebration, but as a reminder of where we stand, and what still lies ahead. Pride today carries both joy and urgency, shaped by a world that continues to shift around questions of visibility, safety, and belonging. It is within this moment that stories matter more than ever.

With its fourth edition, CAFILM PRIDE returns as a vibrant gathering of voices, perspectives, and lived experiences from across the LGBTQ+ spectrum. These films travel from festivals around the world to Marin County, bringing with them not only recognition and acclaim, but a deep sense of humanity—stories that resonate, challenge, and connect us.

More than a showcase, CAFILM PRIDE has become a space—welcoming, open, and essential—where filmmakers and audiences meet to share experiences. It is a place to see and be seen, to listen and to feel, and to celebrate the richness and complexity of a community that continues to shape culture in powerful ways.

“This year’s program comes from a deeply felt place, holding both the joy and the urgency that define Pride today. In a time when visibility, safety, and belonging remain in flux, these films become more than stories; they invite us all to come together, to listen, reflect, and recognize ourselves—and one another—with greater empathy and understanding,”
–  João Federici, CAFILM Senior Programmer and Pride Curator

US PREMIERE SCREENING + CONVERSATION

INVITED GUEST: DIRECTOR ALLAN DEBERTON

Gugu is an almost-twelve-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a soccer player and lives under the loving, open-minded care of his grandmother Dilma, whose warmth gives him space to simply be himself. In their small community by the Araújo Lima reservoir – now slowly drying up and exposing the ghostly remains of a submerged town – the pair share a quiet but powerful bond that shields them from the disapproval of Gugu’s father and the community around them.

As old memories resurface, subtle changes begin to unsettle their routine: Dilma becomes increasingly fragile, and Gugu, determined to keep their world intact, begins to worry about losing the only safe space he’s ever known.

SCREENING + CONVERSATION

INVITED GUESTS: DIRECTOR LUCHINA FISHER, FILM SUBECT/DAD WAYNE MAINES

Inspired by the Emmy-Award winning short documentary of the same name (Netflix, 2023), The Dads chronicles fathers of trans and nonbinary children as they are forced to choose between country and family when a new right-wing administration and conservative Supreme Court take hold in the United States.

Filmed over the course of a year spanning retreats in rural Maine and Minnesota, protests, family milestones, a pivotal U.S. Supreme Court decision, and the collapse of gender-affirming care for youth, The Dads captures this national reckoning with remarkable intimacy through verite footage and interviews with the film’s main protagonists, as documented by Emmy-Award winning director and producer Luchina Fisher and executive producer Dwyane Wade. This is fatherhood as an act of radical love and resistance.

Director: Luchina Fisher (US 2026) 72 min.
