Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo’s tasty and satisfying concoction stars Takumi Saito as Masato, a young Ramen chef who leaves his hometown in Japan and embarks on a culinary journey to Singapore to connect with his mother’s roots and discover new flavors. Encountering tensions on that side of his family, stemming from Japan’s invasion and occupation during World War II, Masato receives assistance from food-blogger Miki (played by Japanese pop star Seiko Matsuda) in studying Singapore’s signature dish Bak Kut Teh and experimenting with a fusion of cuisines that symbolizes “reconciliation” between the two countries and demonstrates the healing power of good food. In Japanese, Mandarin and Cantonese with English subtitles. (Singapore/Japan 2018) 90 min.
