FRIENDLY SIGNS

This powerful short documentary follows Tommy Wickerd, an incarcerated man at San Quentin State Prison, as he works to establish a sign language class within the prison walls. Friendly Signs explores his journey to foster communication, inclusion, and connection among Deaf inmates and staff, offering a rare glimpse into the transformative potential of language access and advocacy behind bars.

Friendly Signs is one of several criminal justice projects supported by The Marshall Project and the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Short Film Fund.

Director: Rahsaan Thomas
(US 2023) 21 min

This program features two compelling documentaries: Friendly Signs, which follows incarcerated advocate Tommy Wickerd as he works to establish a sign language class inside San Quentin State Prison, and Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, a deeply personal portrait of the trailblazing actress and activist as she reflects on her journey, identity, and fight for Deaf representation.

Together, these films shine a light on the transformative power of communication, the right to access language, and the voices that are reshaping our collective understanding of inclusivity.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with special guests, including filmmaker Rahsaan Thomas, and Proud Stutter founder Maya Chupkov.
