The debut feature from Australian filmmaker Jennifer Kent is a fresh take on the horror genre, recently garnering several honors, such as its inclusion on New York Times critic A.O. Scott’s Top 10 Movies 2014. Amelia (Essie Davis) is a single mom still reeling from the death of her husband and struggling alone with her “out of control” six-year-old son Samuel (Noah Wiseman). The boy is convinced that a monster is stalking them, and when a disturbing storybook called Mr. Babadook turns up at their house, a sinister presence makes itself known to both. Kent crafts a splendidly atmospheric tale of psychological depth and utilizes the power of suggestion rather than shock. Writer/Director: Jennifer Kent. (Australia 2014) 94 min.
