Every year in the lead-up to the May DocLands Documentary Film Festival, there are a few documentaries being released theatrically — documentaries that we would consider quintessential DocLands’ films, but that will be released before the Festival takes place. Documentaries that shine in terms of story and production value.  Documentaries that fit perfectly into one or more of DocLands programming strands The Great Outdoors, Art of Impact, and Wonderlands. The DocLands Presents series will showcase just a few of these films.

THE CONDUCTOR IS PLAYING AT THE SMITH RAFAEL FILM CENTER

Leonard Bernstein’s protege Marin Alsop reveals how she smashed the glass ceiling to become an internationally renowned conductor. Set to a breathtaking soundtrack of her performances, The Conductor tells Marin’s story through a combination of intimate interviews and shared professional and private moments, encounters with musicians and cognoscenti in the music world, unseen archival footage with her mentor Leonard Bernstein, and Vérité scenes of Marin conducting some of the world’s great orchestras and teaching the next wave of conductors who, like her, were being excluded from the classical music canon. Director: Bernadette Wegenstein (US 2021) 90 min.
