SUNDAY, OCT. 1 • 4:15

Jennifer M. Kroot’s new documentary celebrates the life and work of Armistead Maupin, author of Tales of the City and one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to re-claim their lives. It also explores the phenomenon of Tales itself, from its popularity as a San Francisco Chronicle column, through the novels and groundbreaking television series. With help from his friends (including interviewees Neil Gaiman, Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Sir Ian McKellan, Amy Tan and others), Maupin describes the long journey that took him to the front lines of the American culture wars. Editor/Co-Director: Bill Weber. Writer/Director: Jennifer M. Kroot. (US 2017) 91 min.

Armistead Maupin will join the filmmaker for a discussion following this special screening.
