“This is a fascinating, informative, and reflective swan song that gives Varda the final word, and some of the due she’s been owed her entire career, as one of the most influential feminist filmmakers.”
– Tina Hassannia, Globe and Mail
A cinema institution unto herself, Agnès Varda conducts a personal career retrospective as only she can, with accomplished skill, inimitable charm, wit, reverie, and copious wonder. The many outlets of her endless creativity coalesce (photography, art, filmmaking, cinema architecture) as Varda shares insight into her artistic whims and motivations, and delights in the many works of her life: beginning as a pioneer of the influential Nouvelle Vague and Cinema Verité, a young experimental filmmaker who transformed her narrative style according to the needs of each project. During the second half of the film, Varda shifts focus to her later digital cinema output, embracing technological industry breakthroughs with characteristic gusto to showcase the world and the fascinating people in it in her own consummate style. A generous visual storyteller, Varda shares the stage with collaborators actress Sandrine Bonnaire, cinematographer Nurith Aviv, and curator Hervè Chandes, relaying memories of their great work together. An apt tribute to a legend of French cinema, lovingly produced by Varda’s daughter Rosalie, Varda by Agnès is an essential and profound work of art, the reality and the representation of a transcendent artist revealing herself. In French and English with English subtitles. Not Rated. Director Agnès Varda (France 2019) 115 min.
